After the earthquake in Nuevo León, the SSN reports a magnitude 4.0 earthquake in Oaxaca this Monday.

The National Seismological Service (SSN) reported a magnitude 4.0 earthquake registered in Oaxaca on the morning of Monday, May 12, maintaining alerts on earthquake activity in the country, one day after the tremor that struck Nuevo León.
The ground continues to shake in Mexico. After the 4.5 magnitude earthquake felt Sunday night in Nuevo León, generating reports of minor damage and concern among the population, seismic activity occurred again this Monday, this time in the state of Oaxaca.
According to the official SSN report, the earthquake occurred at 9:04:12 a.m. (Central Time) on Monday, May 12. The technical details are:
- Magnitude: 4.0
- Location: 19 km northwest of Crucecita, Oaxaca
- Latitude: 15.87°
- Longitude: -96.27°
- Depth: 49 km
So far, no material damage or injuries have been reported as a result of this earthquake in Oaxaca.
The sequence of earthquakes in different regions (although not necessarily geologically connected) serves as a constant reminder that Mexico is a highly seismic country. Therefore, Civil Protection authorities and the National Security Service (SSN) reiterate the importance of maintaining a culture of prevention.
A key element is to have an emergency backpack ready. This resource can be vital during and after an earthquake or other emergency. The SSN reminds you of some essential items it should contain:
- Important documents: Birth certificates, IDs, deeds, etc. (ideally in copy and/or digital backup)
- Family and Friends Directory: With phone numbers, handwritten
- First aid kit
- Non-perishable foods: Canned food, energy bars, etc.
- Bottled water
- Basic tools: Multi-purpose knife, flashlight with batteries, portable radio
- Personal hygiene items
- Raincoat, thermal blankets and warm clothing
- Cash
- Duplicate house and car keys
Being prepared can make all the difference in an emergency situation.
In another cultural context, this Monday also marked the opening of the 2nd International Conference "The Role of the Arts: A Dialogue between Institutions," organized by the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI) and the Autonomous University of Querétaro (UAQ), addressing topics such as art, inclusion, and peace.
