G7 condemns atrocities in Sudan and calls for a ceasefire

The G7 Foreign Ministers (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States), along with the EU High Representative, issued a strongly worded joint statement (released in previous days but relevant today) marking two years of the devastating conflict in Sudan. They unequivocally condemned the war, the atrocities, and the gross human rights violations committed by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The statement underscores that the actions of the warring parties have caused the world's largest humanitarian and displacement crisis. Continued atrocities were reported, including conflict-related sexual violence, ethnically motivated attacks, and the use of starvation as a method of warfare, which is prohibited by international humanitarian law. The FAR attacks in El Fasher were specifically condemned.

The G7 demands an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and serious negotiations. They call on the parties to lift obstacles to cross-border and inter-line humanitarian access, guarantee the safety of humanitarian actors, and allow access across all borders. They urge external actors to cease any support that fuels the conflict and reiterate the need to include civilians, women, and youth in peace processes.
