Letters from the editor: June, the month of Italianness

In Argentina, we call it "Italianness Month" because June 2nd and 3rd mark highly significant celebrations for both Italians and their Italian-Argentine descendants. These dates mark the beginning of activities across the country seeking to highlight and remember these dedicated immigrants and to commit to spreading their culture and traditions. Every June 2nd, since 1947, formal and protocolary events have taken place in Rome to celebrate "Italian Republic Day." These events are replicated almost everywhere in the world where there is an Italian diplomatic representation, or even where there is an organized Italian community. And why is it Republic Day? Because between June 2nd and 3rd, 1946, an institutional referendum was held in Italy in which Italians decided to leave behind the monarchy, which was celebrating its 85th anniversary, and adopt a republican system. What can we highlight from that referendum? The turnout was close to 90%. that women voted for the first time and that the Republicans won with 54% of the vote. As if it were something predetermined by the universe, in September 1995 Argentina passed a law establishing June 3rd as "Italian Immigrant Day" to recognize the work and sacrifice of Italians for the growth and greatness of our country. Now, why did they choose that date? In reality, it's a tribute to Dr. Manuel Belgrano, whom we highlight as the creator of our national flag, but who did much more in the origins of Argentina, being the son of a Genoese immigrant and who was born in the city of Buenos Aires on that day in 1770.
