Road accidents, a growing challenge

Road accidents are a global problem that affects millions of people every year. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 1.19 million people lose their lives annually in traffic accidents, and between 20 and 50 million more suffer non-fatal injuries, many of which result in permanent disabilities. Globally, traffic accidents have become the leading cause of death among children and young people aged 5 to 29 years. More than 90% of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, such as ours, despite the fact that these countries account for approximately 60% of the world's vehicles. This disparity highlights the need to implement effective road safety measures.
In this context, Mexico City is no exception and faces significant challenges in this area. With its dense population and constant traffic, the country's capital faces a considerable and growing rate of road accidents that, according to the traffic accident report of the Ministry of Mobility, claimed the lives of 148 people in traffic accidents by June of last year, with motorcyclists and pedestrians being the main victims.
It is alarming that, although motorcyclists constitute a minor fraction of the total number of road users, they account for a significant proportion of fatalities. This phenomenon can be attributed to factors such as non-compliance with traffic regulations, excessive speed and the improper use or absence of protective helmets.
On the other hand, according to the first National Survey on Road Safety, carried out by the Aleatica Foundation, the University Institute for Research in Traffic and Road Safety (Intras) of the University of Valencia, and SIMO Consulting, an average of 15 thousand people die in road accidents across the country each year, with alcohol and drug use, speeding and distractions while driving being the main risk factors identified by those surveyed.
To effectively tackle road accidents, a combination of strict penalties and public awareness campaigns is essential. Increasing fines for those who break traffic rules can act as an effective deterrent. For example, imposing tougher penalties for speeding, drink-driving or using a mobile phone while driving can significantly reduce risky driving behaviour.
In addition to sanctions, awareness campaigns play a crucial role in educating the population about safe driving practices: the use of seat belts, in the case of motorists, and helmets and other accessories for motorcycle and bicycle drivers; respect for speed limits; not driving under the influence of substances; and attention to pedestrians and cyclists, promoting respect and harmonious coexistence between them.
Road accidents in Mexico City represent a complex challenge that requires the collaboration of authorities, civil society and drivers. Implementing more severe sanctions for traffic violations and developing effective awareness campaigns are fundamental steps to reduce the number of accidents and their consequences. Thus, only through a joint and sustained effort will it be possible to create a safer road environment for all the inhabitants of the capital.
