Colombia has established itself as one of the world's most surprising tourist destinations thanks to its biodiversity and the variety of landscapes it offers. However, one of its lesser-known places, compared to other destinations, has sparked international admiration, being considered a true hidden treasure in the heart of the country. Where is it?
Included in El País's ranking of Colombia's most dazzling natural paradises, Caño Cristales is known as the river of five colors, or the melting rainbow.
Located in the Serranía de la Macarena , in the department of Meta, this is a space where nature reaches its maximum expression of color and life, offering a spectacle that cannot be found anywhere else on the planet.
Its secret lies in the crystal-clear waters that allow you to observe the riverbed where the Macarenia clavigera blooms, an aquatic plant that colors the bottom with shades of red, yellow, green, blue, and black, creating an unparalleled visual landscape.(READ MORE: It's in Antioquia and is one of the hottest towns in the Colombian region )

This natural paradise is located in an area protected by National Parks, as it is the confluence of three fundamental ecosystems: the Amazon, the Andean region, and the Orinoquia. The convergence of these landscapes makes Caño Cristales a unique site in the world, not only for its beauty but also for its ecological importance. For this reason, more and more international tourists include it on their must-see list when visiting Colombia, consolidating the country as the epicenter of nature and adventure tourism.

What months are ideal to visit this destination? The best time to discover Caño Cristales is between late June and late November, when the early year rains have filled its rivers and lagoons, setting the perfect stage for the natural spectacle. During these months, the water level reaches optimal levels for aquatic plants to flourish in all their splendor. It is during this season that the river transforms into a true liquid rainbow, thanks to the Macarenia clavigera, which paints its waters intense reds, greens, yellows, and violets. Each bend in the river offers a different view, making the visit a unique experience that combines nature and unparalleled photography.
Outside of this period, access to Caño Cristales is usually restricted to allow the ecosystem to recover and maintain the beauty of its waters.
Are there any restrictions or special permits for visiting the river?Access to Caño Cristales is free, but it is necessary to obtain an entry permit from local environmental authorities, such as the National Natural Parks of Colombia. This permit must be requested in advance and is subject to availability, as the number of daily visitors is limited to protect the ecosystem. Furthermore, the presence of an authorized guide is mandatory during the visit, and neither visitors nor guides are permitted to substitute those registered on the application. Furthermore, to preserve the biodiversity of the site, there are strict environmental restrictions. The use of sunscreen, repellents, and other cosmetic products that could pollute the water and harm aquatic plants is prohibited.
The use of disposable plastic bottles is also prohibited, so it is recommended that you bring a reusable bottle and comply with all regulations to enjoy a responsible and safe experience.
