Unfiltered Therapy, Harrison Ford's immersion in the television universe that no one talks about

The days of series that everyone watched are over. Some massive television phenomena continue to generate revenue, but their current relevance is only a shadow of what it once was . A few days ago, Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride , founding members of the television universe The Walking Dead , were in awe of the crowds in Madrid . But the viewing figures for Daryl Dixon , the series Reedus and McBride are now in, will not even come close to the heights of The Walking Dead . These, in turn, were not even dreaming of the 50 million North American viewers at the end of MASH or the more than 40 million for Cheers , Dallas , or Seinfeld .

Today, the TV industry offsets these local and simultaneous figures (remember: back then, there was only one chance to watch an episode) with more or less reliable metrics about how much a series is watched across the planet. When Hill Street Blues or Friends were sweeping traditional TV, the latter already had a profitable business model. The platform ecosystem already operates, in principle, with a surplus, but until last year, only Netflix was posting a profit . Its life depends on this, as its sole business is making series and movies and getting us to watch them, while for some of its competitors, content creation and distribution is just another business. Apple TV+'s $1 billion loss in 2024 indicates the extent to which it is the mascot of another larger business: devices .

With a rather sparse catalog but a few niche hits, Apple TV+ heads into the 2025 Emmy ceremony with two series as favorites: The Studio and Separation . The comedy Unfiltered Therapy , with its second season, is also nominated. One of its nominations goes to - drumroll please - Harrison Ford . The legendary actor is nominated for supporting actor for his character in this friendly fiction about psychotherapists. Ford, a pioneer in so many things, arrived late to the series and platform craze . We thought his jump to television would be seen as a complete paradigm shift. But when it happened, nothing happened.

The now octogenarian myth is now part of Taylor Sheridan's ( Yellowstone ) universe in the two seasons of 1923 and also one more in the two installments of Unfiltered Therapy . Seeing him there, between Jason Segel and Jessica Williams (who are great actors, but they are not Harrison Ford because nobody is Harrison Ford) is strange. And yet, his jokes are better because he makes them, his presence elevates the series and, incidentally, Apple TV+ sends a very clear message : we have so much money that we can afford to have Harry as a secondary character in a comedy that we don't mind if only a few people watch.

There's also a catch: almost every series is now watched by just a few people. Or rather, a lot of people, but their global distribution is so dispersed that you're likely to find people around you who don't even know the shows you watch. People who don't even know there are shows starring Harrison Ford . Thirty years ago, just mentioning Ford's guest appearance could almost guarantee astronomical ratings for an episode. In 1993, he appeared briefly in an episode of The Young Indiana Jones and the Los Angeles Times . I remember that episode perfectly.

Unfiltered Therapy is definitely worth watching. It's funny, well-made, and—drumroll please—Harrison Ford stars in it.
