Back to School 2025: Higher Costs Force Better Planning

The return to school always poses a financial challenge for families, but the outlook for 2025 is even more complicated. The National Alliance of Small Businesses (ANPEC) reported that spending per student is higher than last year, raising concerns among parents who must adjust their budgets.
The increases are noticeable in the basic supplies, uniforms, and even cleaning products that schools require. Although the official SEP list includes only the essentials, many schools add extra materials that increase the average cost per student.
Among the most sought-after items are notebooks, pencils, pens, backpacks, and art sets, as well as sports uniforms and school shoes, which have also increased in price. Added to this is the annual school fee, which in many cases is mandatory.
According to ANPEC calculations, spending per student can exceed 3,300 pesos, a figure that directly impacts household finances, especially those with more than one school-age child.
Experts recommend planning ahead, staggering purchases, and focusing on what's truly necessary to avoid compromising financial stability. Buying everything in one day isn't mandatory, so spreading expenses over weeks helps reduce the pressure.
Another recommendation is to avoid products that are too cheap, as they tend to break down quickly and end up causing double expenses. The ideal is to look for good-quality options at fair prices.
It's also important to set limits for children, who often demand fashionable or designer items. Learning to say "no" helps save your wallet and fosters the value of responsibility.
Finally, experts insist on avoiding debt. The key is to spend only what you have available and avoid "credit card swipes," which later become a bigger problem.
Back-to-school season 2025 requires organization, patience, and smart shopping. With planning and control, families can face the season without seriously impacting their finances.
