Marcelo Ebrard presents actions to protect the national industry

MEXICO CITY.- This Monday, during the usual morning press conference of the president of Mexico , Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo , Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón , head of the Ministry of Economy (SE), participated.

At the National Palace , Ebrard Casaubón also highlighted the "Made in Mexico" campaign , in conjunction with the private sector, which will begin next June after the judicial election.

In the Treasury Room , Marcelo Ebrard presented the case of the steel sector and indicated that 1,062 mills registered by the steel importer "have inconsistencies, or irregularities, or simply do not exist."

"And then we're going to carry out a cancellation and deregistration process—that's what it's called—for those registrations. We're going to remove 1,062 mill registrations. That's half of the mills that have been submitted by companies," he explained.

"We're going to prevent importers from using false registrations to import steel. We're going to reduce tariff evasion, because they don't pay taxes either; that is, they pay lower taxes or receive benefits. So we're going to reduce evasion and strengthen trade; we're going to prevent steel triangulation," he added. With this action, Marcelo Ebrard emphasized, domestic producers enjoy fair competition conditions.

Review of the textile sector

Regarding the textile sector, the head of the Ministry of Economy and Finance commented that a review was conducted and found that eight companies were deceiving the Mexican government by claiming to import textiles or footwear, only to then export them: "We verified, we checked, we saw that they weren't exporting; they were lying. So, we canceled those eight companies' participation in the program, froze their accounts, and with the support of the Attorney General's Office, we are investigating."

They had made imports totaling 24 billion pesos by lying to the government, said the Secretary of Economy.

For the textile industry, he highlighted benefits such as promoting fair market conditions, increasing production and competitiveness, creating more jobs, preventing smuggling, and privileging trade with Mexican markets.

He emphasized that reference prices will also be adjusted: "They apply to various categories, but will also be expanded to include sporting goods, paper, cardboard, and other activities."

He explained that these prices will be adjusted to prevent tax evasion and, of course, protect businesses and jobs in Mexico. They will apply starting May 12 to furniture and lighting fixtures; May 26 to toys, games, and guitars; June 16 to recreational and sporting goods; and July 16 to paper and cardboard.
