Retiring is something every worker in Colombia aims to achieve, with the intention of securing their future as soon as they finish their working life. In this context, if you live abroad, Colpensiones has several agreements with other countries to ensure you can continue your contributions. What are these?

In information published on its website, the aforementioned company emphasized that it currently has bilateral and multilateral agreements. The bilateral agreements are with Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Spain, and Uruguay , and they allow members to add the time they have worked in other territories to their pensions so that they can ultimately be considered by national authorities.

Multilateral agreements, for their part, "apply to Colombians and foreigners who have made contributions in two or more countries that have joined the Convention," they note.

Application for the Agreement must be requested in the country of residence or the country where the last contribution was made. Or if you reside in a country that is a signatory to the Ibero-American Multilateral Social Security Agreement but have not made contributions to Social Security pensions, you should contact the liaison agency of the respective country," they point out. The countries that make up this section are: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, Spain, Honduras, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, the Dominican Republic, and Uruguay.

What are the benefits of being a Colpensiones member?

You may have the option of having your pension recognized or recalculated in any of the signatory countries of the agreement and in any country where the person interested in this procedure resides. This grants the General Pension System the opportunity to recognize the pension issues of both Colombian residents abroad and foreigners residing in the country.
