Palamós Hospital allows children who need surgery to be accompanied by a family member.
The Palamós Hospital in Baix Empordà (Girona) will allow a family member to accompany a child during pediatric operations.
The goal is to reduce the stress and anxiety that the procedure can cause in the child. Family members may be present during the anesthesia to accompany the child, and then leave so the procedure can proceed normally.
The hospital explains that, in addition to reducing the child's anxiety, the support contributes to greater safety, as the parents are involved throughout the entire pre-operative process.
Once completed, and after being notified by the medical staff, the family member can return to the resuscitation area with the child, ensuring that they are the first person the child sees.

The supervisor of the surgical unit at Palamós Hospital, Raquel Górriz, points out that the project stems from the professionals' "conviction" to minimize the anxiety associated with the procedure, as long as the space and individual cases allow.
The center points out that the measure is part of its internal strategy to "humanize care to make it more attentive, friendly, and caring, promoted by a committee." In fact, accompaniment has been permitted for cesarean sections performed in the hospital for over three years. Initially, it began with scheduled cesarean sections and is now performed for all, provided the patient requests it.
This measure also guarantees the right enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the European Charter of the Rights of Hospitalized Children and Adolescents, which ensures that they can be accompanied by their caregivers during any medical procedure that involves pain, anxiety, or fear.
