Javier Milei met with Giorigia Meloni in Rome and ratified an agreement to export LNG through YPF and the Italian company ENI.

Argentine President Javier Milei arrived in Rome on Friday, the first stop of his new international tour, and met with his Italian counterpart, Giorgia Meloni , to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries and move forward with an agreement that will allow YPF to export liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Italy.

As part of their commitment to advance collaboration on the "Argentina LNG " project, Milei and Meloni signed a memorandum of understanding between YPF and the Italian company ENI. Both firms, along with others such as Shell, Pampa Energía, and PAE, will position Argentina as the fifth-largest LNG exporter worldwide. They expect the project to generate approximately $15 billion annually for 20 years, consistently starting in 2031.

The meeting between the leaders began around 6:00 p.m. Italian time and lasted almost two hours. During the meeting, Milei and Meloni ratified the adoption of the "Italy-Argentina Action Plan" until 2030 to strategically boost relations between the two countries through bilateral dialogue, economic-trade and financial cooperation, investment, defense and security, and social policies, with a focus on culture, education, and tourism.

The Argentine president and the Italian prime minister also discussed cooperation between the European Union and MERCOSUR, the fight against organized crime, and the war in Ukraine. Meloni is one of the international leaders with whom Javier Milei maintains a good relationship due to their similar ideologies. Their last meeting took place during Pope Francis' funeral, when they spoke and shared a meal.
