Leonel Fernández reveals what he will discuss in talks with former presidents

Leonel Fernández confirmed this Sunday that he will attend the meeting with President Luis Abinader and two other former presidents at the newly announced location, which will be the headquarters of the Ministry of Defense (MIDE).

He assured that President Luis Abinader wants to share with them information that is sensitive to the national well-being regarding Haitian immigration .

"The president has contacted me with a formal and cordial invitation to be at the Ministry of Defense next Wednesday. He has some information he wants to share with the former presidents , and of course, we'll be there," the veteran politician said.

He affirmed that it was his proposal to extend dialogue on the Haitian issue to all sectors within the Economic and Social Council (CES) and noted that this will be the forum in which the People's Force (FP) will present its proposals .

"I had suggested to him, and he accepted, that he not only remain at the level of dialogue with the former presidents , but that he should also bring together all of organized society: business leaders, unions, professional groups, civil society..." he emphasized.

The president of the FP announced that the government will convene a national dialogue after the conclave to develop an action plan regarding Haitian immigration .

If it materializes, this would be the third day of talks with the opposition that this administration has convened. The first was in 2021 to discuss a series of reforms , and the second in 2023 to sign a National Pact that defined the Dominican position regarding Haiti.

Both the FP and the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) excluded themselves, and the document was signed only by minority parties.

Regularization

Fernández, who has been president for three four-year terms, favored the regularization of Haitian immigration , which the business sector has suggested for workers.

He stated that this is necessary because otherwise what we have is chaos .

Swearing-in

The president of the FP spoke about these topics after swearing in a group of young people who belonged to other parties into his political organization .

One of them was Christian Steffano González , former candidate for deputy of the Democratic Option (OD) for the 2024 elections.
