PP and Vox implement cuts in the promotion of Valencian and reduce cultural entities' spending to zero.

The second day of debate and voting on the amendments to the Valencian Government's Budget followed the expected script: the PP and Vox agreed to implement a series of cuts to the promotion of Valencian in both the social and private spheres. This reduction in funding is coupled with the acceptance of Vox's amendments (with some qualifications) to eliminate support for the Full Foundation, an entity created in 2013 to promote books and reading, and the Bromera Foundation, founded in 2002 by the historic publishing house, although it now works independently to promote reading in Valencian and organize activities related to books, culture, and literature.
The first of the entities will receive a €100,000 cut, agreed upon by the two conservative parties, despite the fact that its president, Alicia Sellés, told this newspaper a few days ago that she hoped to maintain part of the aid after last year's reduction from €240,000 to €100,000. The €100,000 they received from the 2024 budget will also disappear, as will the €30,000 that the Bromera Foundation was supposed to receive, which Vox decided to eliminate, now with the support of the PP. The Max Aub Foundation, which was spared from the cuts, was originally proposed by the far right to reduce its aid by €30,000.

In an interview this weekend in La Vanguardia , the regional minister of Education and Culture, José Antonio Rovira, justified this cut by arguing that the organizations that are left without aid already receive money from the Catalan government. "I believe that these types of associations already have sufficient funding from Catalonia and don't need our funds," the minister stated.
Read alsoThe PP and Vox, who make and break things with complete unity in the regional parliament, also slightly modified the allocation of the cuts to the promotion of Valencian. In a compromise amendment, both parties approved removing €500,000 from the aid for the promotion of Valencian in the social sphere, which benefits civic associations and non-profit organizations, unions, professional and business associations, universities, and legal entities outside the Valencian Community, both public and private.
In addition, another 200,000 euros have been cut from subsidies intended to promote Valencian by private-sector businesses, shops, and industries, as well as the promotion of Valencian in film and dubbing activities, in bookstores, in translation publishing, in music and theater, etc.
Modifications Of the 700,000 euro cut to the promotion of Valencian, only 100,000 euros are recovered for language policy issues.Of these 700,000 euros, only 100,000 are reinvested in the General Directorate of Language Policy, since the bulk of the money goes to personnel expenses (306,000 euros), the acquisition of support products for students with special needs (100,000 euros), or to AMPAS (94,000 euros).
Following yesterday's votes, the cuts planned by Vox to the Federation of Muixerangues and the Valencian Federation of Dolçainers and Tabaleters remain unchanged. The €15,000 cut from each of these entities will be used to cover the maintenance costs of the Orange Museum.

These amendments are not the only ones voted on yesterday. In the Employment area of the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Employment, Vox and the PP implemented the promised cuts to unions and employers (with an extra €100,000), while in the Ministry of the Environment, the far right secured the support of the PP to change several references to climate change through six amendments. In order to avoid directly referring to this phenomenon, the two parliamentary partners agreed to refer to "weather and climate change" in the budget.
Language change The People's Party (PP) accepts Vox's language: it's not "climate change," it's "weather and climate change."Worthy of special mention is the negotiation of Vox's amendment on historical memory, which, taking advantage of the new features of the Concord Law passed last year, called for the promotion and dissemination of reparations for political violence. In its initial draft, Vox proposed that this reparation be limited to victims of the 1931-1939 period, which would exclude those repressed and executed by the Franco regime. This section has been removed, as has the University of Valencia, among the universities benefiting from this grant. The recipients are CEU-Cardenal Herrera (€34,000), the Catholic University of Valencia (€33,000), and Miguel Hernández University (€33,000).
Valencian teachers express their concern about "attacks on the use and promotion of Valencian by the Consell"The Interuniversity Institute of Valencian Philology (IIFV), made up of the majority of Valencian teachers and researchers from the University of Alicante, the Universitat Jaume I of Castelló and the Universitat de València, has expressed its "deep concern at the repeated attacks on the use and promotion of Valencian by the current Consell."
"In nearly two years of legislative session, the Consell's use of Valencian has been reduced to a merely symbolic role, which is reflected both in public interventions and in the content of institutional portals and official communications from the regional ministries," the institute explains in a statement.
In the opinion of these teachers, the language policy promoted by the Valencian government has led to a "drastic reduction in funding for numerous organizations with a recognized track record in promoting Valencian."
