Pressure on Milei over the crypto scandal: the opposition requested a special session in the House of Representatives to create an investigative commission

In the wake of the cryptogate involving President Javier Milei, the opposition has called for a special session in the House of Representatives on March 11 to approve the creation of an investigative commission and other projects for requests for reports and interpellations to government officials.
The request was submitted by Democracy for Ever - the radical group that responds to critics Martín Lousteau and Facundo Manes - and by the Encuentro Federal bloc, led by Miguel Pichetto.
The agenda includes 10 projects. The main one: Pablo Juliano's to create an investigative commission "on the President's conduct, related to the promotion of the cryptocurrency $Libra."
The others are initiatives from the different parties, including the Left and Union for the Homeland (UP), to request information and question Milei and her sister Karina, the Chief of Staff, Guillermo Francos, the presidential spokesman, Manuel Adorni, and the Minister of Justice, Mariano Cúneo Libarona.
The impeachment projects presented by UP and by the socialist Esteban Paulón together with Mónica Fein and Natalia De la Sota from Córdoba were not included due to lack of consensus .
"We are not at the extremes, we do not believe that the conditions for other institutional measures are met, but it is essential to move forward with the investigation. Congress is a control body of the Executive," said the radical deputy and former judge Fernando Carbajal.
Last week, the Senate tried to approve an investigative commission, a project promoted by the UCR, but legislators from that party who allowed the issue to be discussed on the spot later voted against their own project . At the request of the Government, they preferred to delay it and send it to be discussed first in commission. The text failed to be approved by one vote.
Now the legislators will return to the charge, but in the House of Representatives. "The intention of the Democracy for Ever bloc is that the House of Representatives does not look to the side as the Senate did . It is our responsibility as the Legislative Branch to control the acts of government, especially when we are facing a scandal of global proportions and we observe that from the President of the Nation to his closest entourage, acts that are contrary to public ethics could have been committed," stated the Democracy for Ever bloc.
The Union for the Fatherland bloc, although it has not signed the request for a session, is willing to support and add its 98 deputies. Likewise, in order to achieve a quorum, the position of the Civic Coalition - which also has an initiative to request information from Francos - will also be key.
Opening the session is the first challenge for the opposition, but not the only one. Since the bills do not have a committee opinion, in order to be approved they would have to gather two thirds of the votes present, something impossible.
For this reason, the benches' plan B is to vote on the summons to the commissions - Constitutional Affairs and Petitions - to force them to discuss the projects and issue an opinion within a set period. With an opinion, the projects can go to the floor and be voted on with a simple majority.
