SEMUJERES takes over the Women's Political Observatory for the 2025 judicial election

In a formal ceremony held this Friday, the Quintana Roo Electoral Institute (IEQROO) handed over the presidency and operation of the Observatory of Women's Political Participation in Quintana Roo to the Secretariat for Women (SEMUJERES), as part of an institutional effort to strengthen the protection, promotion, and guarantee of women's political and electoral rights in the state.
The transition is taking place in a key context: the electoral process of June 1, 2025, when for the first time in the state's history, judges and magistrates will be elected by citizen vote. This exercise will set a precedent in the configuration of the judiciary, and, in light of this, effective political participation, free from violence and under conditions of substantive equality for women, is a priority.
During the ceremony, IEQROO President Rubí Pacheco Pérez presented the Observatory's 2024-2025 activity report to Esther Burgos Jiménez, head of SEMUJERES, as well as proposed guidelines for its operation in this new phase.
"We trust that the Secretariat for Women will continue and strengthen the Observatory's work. The women of Quintana Roo deserve free, safe, and unhindered political participation," Pacheco Pérez said upon formally presenting the award.
For her part, Esther Burgos Jiménez affirmed that assuming the leadership of the Observatory represents a commitment to implement concrete actions against all forms of political gender-based violence. "We will focus on promoting women's empowerment, their informed participation, and equal access to decision-making spaces," she stated.
The event was also attended by Sergio Avilés Demeneghi, presiding judge of the Quintana Roo Electoral Tribunal (TEQROO), who reported that 33 cases of gender-based political violence have been recorded in the state during 2024. He emphasized that the TEQROO offers electoral public defense services to support victims and stressed the urgency of maintaining coordinated strategies to consolidate substantive equality.
Avilés Demeneghi presented an analysis of the "Women in Politics: 2025" map, noting that Mexico has made significant progress in female representation, although she warned: "Gaps persist that can only be closed with political will, effective legislation, and institutional collaboration."
With this new phase under the direction of SEMUJERES, the Observatory consolidates its position as a fundamental instrument for ensuring that no woman is excluded, silenced, or violated in the exercise of her political rights, especially given the historical significance of the upcoming electoral process, which will redefine Quintana Roo's judicial system.
