Senator Omar Fernández calls for attention to the lack of school spaces

Senator Omar Fernández , representing the National District, reported this Tuesday that there is still a shortage of vacancies in educational centers 45 days before the start of the 2025-2026 school year .
According to a press release, the spokesperson for the senators of the Fuerza del Pueblo (FP) party stated that the economic crisis and rising tuition costs have forced many parents to migrate from the private to the public sector, unable to find space in most schools.
"Three years after the private sector bonds were issued, and more than 900 billion pesos later, which is equivalent to 4% for each year, we still haven't been able to implement adequate policies to mitigate this situation," the legislator stated.
During his time in the Senate, he argued that Dominican children should be the priority of the education system, and that resources and mechanisms for their return to the classroom should not be spared.
Additionally, in the coming days, the National District Senate Office will tour the capital's schools to inform the Ministry of Education of any spaces that are not in a condition or capacity to accommodate students from their districts, so that they can find a solution before the start of classes.
He questioned the Dominican Republic's Ministry of Education (MINERD)'s failure to prepare for reducing the student population per classroom or the dropout rates caused by the pandemic.
- He also noted that some schools have enrollment waiting lists exceeding 100 children and adolescents.
In the case of the República de Honduras School in the National District, he said that three teachers are needed to manage the enrolled students.
He recalled that Article 63 of the Dominican Constitution establishes the guarantee of free, quality public education in Dominican territory.
