Sheinbaum: Judicial election will clean up power; changes to ISSSTE and new pensions

President Sheinbaum defends judicial elections, announces revisions to the ISSSTE law for decent pensions, and launches registration for Welfare Pensions. Direct impact on your life.

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo defended the recent judicial election in Mexico, asserting that it will "clean up the judiciary," and announced that her administration will work to strengthen the pension fund, including revisions to the 2007 ISSSTE Law. At the same time, registration for the Welfare Pensions program begins today.

During her regular morning press conference this Monday, June 9, 2025, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo addressed crucial issues on the country's political and social agenda, highlighting her stance on judicial reform and new measures regarding pensions and welfare programs.

Regarding the controversial popular vote election of judges, magistrates, and ministers, President Sheinbaum expressed her support for the process. She stated that "every democratic process can be improved," implicitly acknowledging that there may have been areas of opportunity, but maintained her conviction that "this election will cleanse the judiciary." She also emphasized that on election day, "a diverse vote was observed, and not everyone voted the same way," suggesting a pluralistic exercise.

This defense of such a profound structural reform, despite the criticism it may have generated, indicates a line of continuity with the transformative policies previously promoted and a commitment to significant changes in the country's institutions, even if these entail intense debate.

Another significant announcement was her administration's commitment to work on strengthening the pension system for state employees. The president stated that efforts will be made to reverse the effects of the 2007 reform to the ISSSTE Law, which individualized employee accounts.

"The Welfare Pension Fund is a way to reverse the 2007 reform because it provides decent pensions to all those who remained in individual accounts." – Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico.

Sheinbaum noted that the recently created Pension Fund for Well-being is a key tool in this effort to guarantee "decent pensions" for those affected by the individual account scheme.

In line with the focus on social justice, the Secretary of Welfare, Ariadna Montiel Reyes, announced the start of the registration period for Welfare Pensions. This process will be open from today, Monday, June 9, until June 21, 2025.

During the conference, the necessary documents and requirements for older adults and people with disabilities to join this social program were detailed. The opening of registrations for other specific programs, such as one aimed at women ages 18 to 64, was also mentioned.

General Requirements for the Welfare Pension (Senior Citizens – Example):

* Birth certificate.

* Valid identification document (voter's card, passport, etc.).

* CURP (Unique Population Registry Code).

* Proof of address (maximum 6 months old).

* Contact telephone number.

The joint announcement of the revision of the ISSSTE Law and the expansion of welfare programs appears to be a calculated political maneuver. It seeks to reinforce the image of a government focused on the well-being of the population, especially the most vulnerable sectors and public workers, at a time when economic indicators such as inflation could generate public concern. These actions, with a high direct social impact, could strengthen the government's base of support and set the tone for its social agenda.
