Innovation from the classroom: This is how academia stands out in patents in the country

Innovation and research continue to be essential pillars for the country's development. In 2024, Colombia reached a milestone in this field: 239 patents were granted to Colombian residents, 98 of which were awarded to Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). This result, according to experts, consolidates academia as "a leading player in the generation of technology and applied knowledge."

The Antonio Nariño University (UAN) leads the way, obtaining 10 patents during the year, surpassing the National University of Colombia and Ecopetrol , both with 8 patents. In fourth place were the Minuto de Dios University Corporation and the Industrial University of Santander, with 6 patents each . SENA, the University of Valle, and the Francisco de Paula Santander University shared the next spot with 5 patents, while the Autonomous University of Bucaramanga and the University of the Andes closed the top 10 with 4 patents each.

According to this ranking, prepared with data from the Superintendency of Industry and Commerce (SIC), nine universities and only one energy company appear among the top ten positions, reflecting the high capacity of academic institutions to transform research into technological solutions with economic and social impact.

With a presence in 26 cities across the country, the UAN has consolidated an institutional model oriented toward the application of knowledge. Its Technology Acceleration and Transfer Department connects research results with communities and businesses, ensuring that solutions are viable and protected by intellectual property.

This sustained work is not new: in the last eight years , the UAN has accumulated 50 patents, reaffirming its commitment to a clear premise: research to transform.

However, the ranking highlights a gap: the low participation of national companies in the top spots. This fact underscores the urgency of strengthening collaboration between universities and businesses, especially in technological development and protection processes.
