Divers, a symbol and role model for young people: Sheinbaum

During the meeting with divers and members of the synchronized swimming team who had a historic participation in the recent World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, President Claudia Sheinbaum highlighted their outstanding performance, which made them a symbol, a reference for many young people in Mexico.

After noting that they had a very pleasant conversation in which they discussed various topics, including how they and their coaches could be better supported, Sheinbaum affirmed that Mexico's recent participation in the World Cup was the one in which it has won the most medals in the history of these sports.

This speaks to the excellent work Rommel (Pacheco, head of the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sports) is doing, not only in providing financial support, but also in ensuring that they participate in more competitions and that there is more experience in high performance.

The President explained that during the meeting, she spoke to them about the importance of representing Mexico in international competitions, our great country, and that every time they step onto the trampoline, they feel their greatness in their hearts. It was a very beautiful conversation because of what they now mean to Mexican youth .

During the meeting with athletes, including diver Osmar Olvera, the president suggested that, in their free time and in agreement with their coaches, they could visit primary and secondary schools to give talks to young people about their experiences as athletes.

At the World Championships in Singapore, the national team won eight medals, surpassing their best performance at Fukuoka 2023, when they collected seven. Olvera was the star with four medals: one gold and three silver.

On another note, the head of the Executive Branch condemned the attacks against referee Katia Itzel García following her performance in the Leagues Cup game between Cincinnati and Monterrey, which ended with a defeat for the Monterrey team. After describing her career as extraordinary for making her way in a male environment, she pointed out that there is always controversy surrounding refereeing. The referees can be questioned, but from there, to criticism for being a woman, we are totally against that.

Pumas missed out on a spot in the 2025 Leagues Cup quarterfinals and were eliminated from the tournament after falling 3-1 to Inter Miami, who were without their star player, Argentine Lionel Messi, in the third and final match of the initial phase, played yesterday at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The U.S. Open announced that $90 million in prize money will be distributed this year, the largest purse in tennis history and 20 percent more than in 2024, when the total compensation was $75 million.

Top ATP and WTA players have called for a more equitable distribution of revenue across this season's four Grand Slams , as those at the top can benefit from increased prize money while lower-level players often struggle.

Novak Djokovic, Coco Gauff, as well as reigning champions Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner, were among 20 players who signed a letter sent to the Big Four bosses in March, calling for more prize money and a greater say in decisions that directly impact them .

Now, the winners of the men's and women's singles categories will each receive $5 million, up from $3.6 million last year. The U.S. Open singles competition has been extended to 15 days due to increased attendance, and will run from August 24 to September 7.

This year sees the introduction of a new format for mixed doubles, which will feature many renowned players, as it will be played over two days in the week preceding the start of the main competition at Flushing Meadows.
