England take revenge against Spain at Wembley

England beat Spain at Wembley to get a little revenge after the 2023 World Cup final. For the team coached by Sarina Weigman, a goal from Jessica Park and good interventions from their goalkeeper, Hannah Hampton , were enough to win 1-0, make up for the draw with Portugal signed in the debut of the Nations League and condemn Montse Tomé 's team to defeat, who had beaten Belgium at the Ciutat de Valencia (3-2).
The Spaniards, who dominated much of the match against rivals who knew how to perfectly exploit their counter-attacks and defensive solidity, tried hard to score a goal that would allow them to take at least a draw from their visit to London, but saw their attempts frustrated time and again by the well-organised rival wall.
Spain's control of the game in the early stages was of no use. England, with a shot from Park after a rebound from Irene Paredes practically on the goal line, took the lead in the 33rd minute, after overcoming the initial dominance of the Spanish and making several dangerous approaches to Cata Coll 's area.
Spotlights go outThe Barça goalkeeper, in fact, was responsible for thwarting a dangerous first free-kick from Lauren James and shortly afterward she thwarted a shot that was as close as it was angled by Chelsea's own forward. With the score at 1-0, the visitors, who had already seen Lucía García hit the crossbar shortly before the end of the first quarter, regained their momentum and threatened, but neither Salma Paralluelo nor Aitana Bonmatí were able to beat Hampton. The Chelsea goalkeeper, however, had to work hard to thwart a final shot from the two-time Ballon d'Or winner, almost as the first 45 minutes of the match were dying out.
After the break, Spain came out more than willing to equalise. And, in the early moments, Mariona Caldentey , Lucía García and Salma had good chances to do so. England, however, responded with a soft shot from Clinton and, after a brief blackout of the floodlights at Wembley, a shot from outside the area that the Barcelona goalkeeper managed to deflect.
Third in groupDespite the scare, the Spanish team opted to stretch their lines a little more. Their attacks, despite everything, did not achieve their objective. Most of their shots did not find the direction of the goal. And, when they did, as in a promising attempt by Leila, Olga Carmona 's replacement on the left side, they found the British goalkeeper's accuracy. England was also close to dictating the sentence in a final stretch in which Cata Coll saved a double chance with some suspense and was ultimately unable to follow up with the long-awaited equaliser.
Portugal, who beat Belgium 0-1, remain first with four points, the same as England. Spain falls to third place, with three points, which would require them to go to a playoff to avoid relegation, while Belgium remains at the bottom.
