Arlington, VA — IndyCar driver Patricio Pato O'Ward and executives from the racing series reacted with surprise to a social media post from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security promoting plans for a migrant detention center in Indiana called Speedway Slammer , which includes a car with the same number as the only Mexican driver in the championship.
The ad has already drawn criticism in the state, starting with its eye-catching nickname , Speedway Slammer , which alludes to Indiana's tradition of auto racing.

Tuesday's post included an image of an IndyCar-style vehicle bearing the number 5, the same number as the Arrow-McLaren vehicle Pato drives in the championship, with the acronym ICE
printed multiple times in a manner similar to how sponsorships appear. It appeared to be a computer-generated image, with the car on a track and a prison-like building in the background.
The use of a car and the allusion to the series are not gratuitous. Indiana is home to the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the very location where IndyCar is headquartered.
They reject any connection
"We were not aware of any plans to incorporate our likeness as part of yesterday's announcement
," IndyCar said in a statement released Wednesday. "Consistent with our approach to public policy and political matters, we are communicating our preference that our intellectual property not be used in the future in connection with this matter
."
O'Ward said she didn't see the post until a friend texted her about it. "I haven't read much into it because I don't think I want to

The Mexican, second in the IndyCar drivers' standings this season with two wins, was in Texas to promote next year's inaugural Arlington Grand Prix. He's also been mentioned as a candidate for a seat in Formula 1, where he has been a test driver.
That race will be held on March 15 on a 4.3-kilometer (2.7-mile) street circuit surrounding the home stadiums of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys and MLB's Texas Rangers. O'Ward threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Rangers' game against the New York Yankees.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem used the name Speedway Slammer when announcing the new partnership with the state of Indiana to expand detention space by 1,000 beds. However, the agreement does not involve new construction.
“If you're in the United States illegally, you could find yourself at the Indiana Speedway Slammer ,” Noem said, comparing it to the controversial Florida Everglades facility. She added that the new partnership will help remove the worst of the worst from our country

Pumas missed out on a spot in the 2025 Leagues Cup quarterfinals and were eliminated from the tournament after falling 3-1 to Inter Miami, who were without their star player, Argentine Lionel Messi, in the third and final match of the initial phase, played yesterday at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Rayados de Monterrey coach Domenec Torrent called for a second round of consideration
regarding the Leagues Cup's new format, stating that clubs that have nothing to play for in the third and final round of the initial phase, as is currently the case with his team, are only wasting time and missing out on the opportunity to continue preparing for the Liga MX tournament.
Unlike previous editions of the binational tournament, where all Major League Soccer (MLS) teams participated, only 18 of the 29 clubs from the US league and 18 from the Mexican tournament competed in the 2025 Leagues Cup. During the first phase, each team plays three matches against opponents from the opposing league. The four teams from each league with the most points in these matches will advance to the quarterfinals, while the other 14 will be eliminated.

New York. Major League Baseball (MLB) announced yesterday that Jen Pawol will be the first female umpire in a regular-season game in its more than 100-year history.
The New Jersey native, a minor league umpire since 2016, will be part of the umpiring crew for the three-game series between the Marlins and Braves in Atlanta on Saturday and Sunday.

At 48 years old, Pawol worked spring training games in 2024 and this year.
The MLB's decision comes 28 years after the gender barrier for referees was broken in the NBA, 10 years after it was dissolved in the NFL, and three years after the men's World Cup employed a female referee. The NHL still has no women on the ice.
In 2024, Pawol became the first woman to umpires major league spring training games since Ria Cortesio in 2007. Cortesio spent nine years in the minor leagues, including the last five in the Double-A Southern League, and was released after the 2007 season.
