Osmar Olvera, the Mexican capable of defeating the Chinese

This Friday, August 1, Osmar Olvera showed the world that the Chinese are neither invincible nor perfect. The Mexican diver made history by winning the individual 3m springboard event at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore , thereby breaking a 20-year reign in which the Asians had held first place without interruption.
The promise was fulfilled. Several years ago, when Olvera was still a child, he declared that one day he would defeat the Chinese and become an Olympic champion. While winning the top medal at the Olympic Games is still pending, part of that promise has already been fulfilled after defeating the two Asian divers at the World Championships, relegating them to second and third place.
The 21-year-old is destined to become the leading figure in Mexican diving, because just a year after he, along with Juan Celaya , shook the Chinese duo in the 3m synchronized event in Paris 2024 , he has now stopped China's power in world championships individually, since since 2005 the representatives of the Asian country had recorded absolute dominance in that event.
With the 529.55 points he earned early Friday morning, Osmar became the second Mexican to win a gold medal at a world championships in this discipline; the first was Paola Espinosa in Rome 2009. Throughout the history of the world championships, Mexico has only three gold medals, and two have been won by Olvera. She also won the 1m springboard at Doha 2024 , but this event is not part of the Olympic program.
As if that weren't enough, the Mexico City native, who also spent several years training in Guadalajara, is the country's most decorated athlete. Considering his medals at the Olympic Games and world championships, Olvera has a total of ten: two won at Paris 2024 and eight at the World Championships in Fukuoka 2023, Doha 2024, and Singapore 2025.
With the medal Olvera won in Singapore , the Mexican delegation reached seven medals, which are divided into one gold, four silver and two bronze, and Osmar has contributed four.
