For some, the proposal is reminiscent of those old-fashioned boat trips across the Atlantic, but with all the comforts of modern times . For others, cruise fans, it is the possibility of making the most of everything offered on board, with the peace of mind that it is a long trip, lasting several days, and without so many people changing.
Repositioning cruises , whether transatlantic in the case of those that go back and forth between American ports and Europe or those that travel across the Pacific linking South America with the United States , have particular characteristics that fascinate some, although they may not entirely convince others.
First of all, you need to know what a repositioning cruise is .
With the different seasons around the world, shipping companies plan their activity for the entire year well in advance and, based on this, they arrange the ships.
For example, it is known that between October/November and March/April is the cruise season in South America, while during the European summer, there is much more demand for circuits in the Mediterranean (although, it should be noted, in these winter months in Europe there are companies that maintain some itineraries).

This means that companies have to move ships , " reposition" them , so that, after operating with "normal" circuits - such as 3 or 4 night minicruises, or week-long or 10-day trips - in a certain area, they begin their high season trips in another region.
"They are a unique experience, where sailing and life on board take on a special role . As these are longer trips than traditional ones, the range of activities is significantly expanded," explains Pablo Laudonia, MSC Cruises Sales Manager for Argentina and Latam.
From Costa Cruises, Fernando Joselevich, Country Manager for Argentina and Latam, explains: "With more days on board, we can highlight some additional surprises , both gastronomic and celebratory. For example, special culinary events are organized at the buffet, adapted to the experience of a long cruise, or dinners under the stars on days of ocean navigation."

One of the advantages that is often pointed out in relation to cruises of this type is the price .
"The all-inclusive fare is very competitive compared to other travel options of similar duration," says Joselevich, who believes that these trips could be attractive "for young and adult couples who can enjoy the trip with all the comforts and also for digital nomads, who value the possibility of working and enjoying the trip simultaneously, thanks to the high-quality satellite Internet connection available on board."

MSC's Laudonia highlights the possibility of getting to know different cities, towns and cultures with the convenience of not having to change hotels , transport luggage or worry about food, something that is the strength of all cruises.
Another plus is the more relaxed pace , as there is not as frequent passenger turnover and the crew can get to know the passengers better.
But there is one fundamental fact to take into account: the duration of the trip and the days of sailing without touching port.
"It is important to consider that a transatlantic cruise from Buenos Aires to Savona (Italy) lasts 21 days . Therefore, it is necessary to have that time available for the trip," says Joselevich.
Also, depending on the route, there may be several days of sailing in a row , without touching port. For some it can be a lot of fun and for others, not so much.

These trips are not circular, that is, you do not leave and return to the same port. Therefore, the cost of the airfare must be added to the cruise fare: if you leave Buenos Aires and end up in Europe, you will have to buy a flight to return. Some agencies sell the cruise package with the airfare already included.
The proposals multiply depending on the number of cruises operating in this area. Here are some to give you an idea of itineraries and prices.
- The Costa Favolosa ship departs from Buenos Aires on March 29, 2025 and its final destination is Savona (Italy) , where it arrives on April 17. The stops: Rio de Janeiro and Recife (Brazil), San Vicente Island (Cape Verde), Las Palmas (Spain), Casablanca (Morocco), Barcelona (Spain) and Marseille (France). The crossing involves 4 consecutive days of sailing. The rate for a double inside cabin starts at US$ 4,118 (the price is for two people, with taxes); an outside cabin, from US$ 5,141 and with a balcony, US$ 7,651. A beverage package for the entire crossing, US$ 760 and Wi-Fi US$ 82 (these extra service prices are per person).
- In the opposite direction, the MSC Fantasia ship has a departure on November 6, 2025 from Civitavecchia, Italy , to Buenos Aires. It is an 18-night trip with stops in Barcelona (Spain), Tangier (Morocco), Las Palmas (Spain), Salvador, Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Montevideo (Uruguay) and arrival in Buenos Aires. In a double cabin with airfare it costs US$ 2,299 per person, excluding taxes.
- Departing from Buenos Aires to Los Angeles (United States), the Sapphire Princess ship from Princess Cruises offers a 32-day trip departing on March 7th that lasts US$3,505 per person. The stops are Montevideo, Puerto Madryn, the Falkland Islands, Cape Horn (navigation), Ushuaia, Punta Arenas, Amalia Glacier (scenic cruise), Puerto Montt, San Antonio (Santiago de Chile), Coquimbo, Pisco, Lima, Manta (Quito), Puntarenas (Costa Rica), Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas and arrival in Los Angeles. This itinerary alternates days of sailing - the maximum is three days in a row - with the stops. An alternative is to start the trip in Santiago de Chile , embarking on March 21st and take an 18-day cruise to Los Angeles. It costs US$1,589 per person. In the latter case, you have to consider the airfare to fly to Chile and then the return flight from Los Angeles.
