Search for missing children Jeffrey and Emma continues this morning

This morning, police and volunteers continue searching around the Groningen town of Finsterwolde for the missing children Jeffrey (10) and Emma (8). The police suspect that they were kidnapped by their father.
The children were last seen on Saturday afternoon. An Amber Alert was issued in connection with their disappearance. This only happens if the authorities are convinced that the children are in mortal danger.
Brother and sisterYesterday evening, the first day of the citizen search for the missing brother and sister from Beerta came to an end. At least 220 people participated in the search around the Groningen municipality of Oldambt, which includes Finsterwolde. When it became too dark, the search was stopped.

The search area was 500 by 500 meters. The volunteers came mainly from surrounding areas. With a yellow vest and a blue skewer they went along the water and through the tall grass, looking for trampled grass or suspicious spots. The citizens' initiative worked together with the police, also to prevent people from entering the search area uncoordinated.
Tire tracksYesterday afternoon, the police found tire tracks in the Carel Coenraadpolder that led to water. Further investigation was then conducted at that location, but despite the use of sonar boats, the children were not found.

On Sunday, the police announced that they were concerned for the lives of the children. There are indications that the father, 67-year-old Klaas Bijl, wanted to take his own life and that of the children.
For example, the police found a letter from the father that gave reason 'to believe that the children's lives are in danger'.
