Does it seem like there aren't many flowers in your garden in late summer and autumn? Then plant some late-flowering, pesticide-free bloomers now for hungry bumblebees, bees, and butterflies in the fall. The wet, warm weather is ideal for planting.

Scan your borders for seedlings of plants you'd like to grow more of, such as wax flower ( Cerinthe ), nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) , lady-in-the-mist ( Nigella ), poppies ( Papaver ), and other native plants . If necessary, move them to where you want them to grow, or pot them.

You can prune an apple tree in the summer.

Cut back hedges and individual plants of santolina ( Santolina chamaecyparissus ), lavender , and rosemary with hedge trimmers to just above the base of this year's flower stems. Do not cut into the woody growth below the lower leaves.

Blackcurrants

Harvest blackberries by cutting off the branches with ripe fruit – this way you've pruned them at the same time. Cut the entire branch back to the base.

widow's cultivation: pointed cabbage

Get started with so-called widow cultivation ! This means sowing suitable cabbage varieties (such as pointed cabbage ) this month, planting them out under fleece or in a cold frame in September and October, and harvesting them between March and May.

Pick herbs such as coriander , basil and parsley regularly to prevent bolting and to promote the production of new leaves.

Sow green manures on vacant plots. By keeping the soil covered with vegetation, you prevent nutrients from being washed away by rain and simultaneously nourish the soil for the next crop.

Grab your phone or camera and take pictures of your garden! As you start making new garden plans later in the year, you'll immediately see which plants did well (or not).

If you're planning to lay a new lawn this fall, prepare the soil now. This gives it plenty of time to settle before you start sowing grass or laying turf .
