After 15 years, a key expressway has changed. Hundreds of cars have crashed here.

• The S1 expressway is crucial for southern Poland. It will relieve the congested existing National Road No. 1, which is the backbone of the Silesian Voivodeship.
• As part of the work, the worst corner in Poland has just been closed. Hundreds of cars were wrecked there.
• The solution used slowed down traffic - cars can travel there at a speed of 40 km/h.

The infamous bend in Bielsko-Biała on the S1 expressway has been eliminated. According to road officials, on Monday, August 4th, traffic management changed at the rebuilt Suchy Potok interchange in the Cieszyn-Żywiec and Żywiec-Cieszyn directions.

The change was introduced in connection with the implementation of the task entitled Construction of the S1 expressway , section III Dankowice - Suchy Potok.

A difficult curve has turned into a large loop. This solution has slowed traffic, with cars limited to 40 km/h.

For 15 years - that is, since the opening of this section of the road - the problem has been that many drivers driving on the S1 expressway did not adjust their speed to the limits - the bend had to be taken at a maximum speed of 60 km/h.

There were days when several cars even crashed into the barriers on the curve. The most dangerous situations were when the road was slippery.

That's why the infamous nickname "idiots' corner" quickly caught on. Some drivers called it the worst corner in Poland. The Bielskie Drogi website counted cars that veered off the road and hit the guardrails. By the fall of 2019, the number had already reached one hundred , and since then, there have been many more similar incidents, some of them tragic.

For years, drivers and local government officials have been appealing to the police and the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways to improve safety on bends.

However, GDDKiA explained that this road layout is temporary and will change after the construction of the S1 expressway from Mysłowice to Bielsko-Biała , specifically the section from Bielsko-Biała to Dankowice.
