Greta Thunberg did not sail to Palestine. Israeli MFA: "End of the show"
After being seized, the yacht changed course and headed for a port in Israel. Israeli authorities had previously announced that they would not allow the boat to reach the shores of the enclave , where the war has been ongoing since October 7, 2023. The activists wanted to deliver a small, symbolic amount of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and draw the attention of world public opinion to the ongoing crisis there .
Greta Thunberg stopped by Israeli soldiers on her way to PalestineThe seizure of the yacht by Israeli soldiers took place on the night from Sunday to Monday (June 8-9) and was confirmed by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to one of the passengers, French MEP Rima Hassan, the crew of the Freedom Flotilla were stopped by Israeli soldiers in international waters at around 2 a.m.
" The 'celebrity' selfie yacht sails safely to the shores of Israel. The passengers will return to their home countries," the ministry said on X.
The ministry also published a recording of the activists and the comment: "All the passengers of the selfie yacht are safe and sound. They were given sandwiches and water. The show is over."
The Israeli Foreign Ministry assured that humanitarian aid carried by activists that was not "eaten by celebrities" will reach the Gaza Strip.
"The small amount of aid that was on the yacht and was not eaten by the 'celebrities' will be delivered to Gaza through real channels for the delivery of humanitarian aid," the statement said.
Earlier, Israeli Defense Minister Yoaw Gallant ordered the army to stop the yacht Madleen from reaching the Gaza Strip, describing the mission as a "propaganda effort on behalf of Hamas."
Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, expressed support for the Freedom Flotilla and encouraged further attempts to break the naval blockade. "Madleen's voyage may have ended, but her mission is not over. Every Mediterranean port must send boats of aid and solidarity to Gaza," she wrote on X.
Since March of this year, Israel has been blocking aid deliveries to Gaza in order to — as the local authorities argue — put pressure on Hamas. In their opinion, the blockade is necessary to prevent weapons deliveries to the terrorist organization. Currently, only a very limited amount of humanitarian aid is allowed, which does not cover the needs of the population.
