Indulgence at St. Anthony's in Jersey City

The annual commemoration of St. Anthony of Padua was celebrated with a special mass, a procession through the streets of Jersey City, and a meeting with parishioners. The indulgence ceremony in the church bearing his name took place on Sunday, June 15, and was very popular with the faithful.

"Saint Anthony is known all over the world, and his name was made famous by his blessed life. He is adored by everyone, especially Poles, Italians, Portuguese and Argentines. He was a very wise, pious and helpful man, which is why he deserved to be a saint. He lived a very short life and died at the age of only 38. He wanted to be a missionary in Morocco, but his fate was different. He was born in Portugal and died in Italy," explained Canon Józef Urban in an interview with "Nowy Dziennik", talking about the patron saint of the oldest Polish parish in New Jersey.

The pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Church in Jersey City added that through the intercession of this patron saint many miracles have occurred, including in his life and in the parish he has led for 25 years.
“Thanks to his help, we managed to save and renovate our church, and also make it financially independent,” added the priest. He also noted that the annual indulgence is an opportunity to thank God for everything we have, and especially for the good we have received through the intercession of St. Anthony.
"He is both the patron of marriages and lost things. In his life he mainly dealt with the poor, the needy and the needy, to whom he distributed food. That is why during the Holy Mass we blessed bread, which we later distributed to the faithful as a keepsake," emphasized Canon Józef Urban.

FESTIVAL CEREMONY
The solemn service combined with the procession enjoyed great interest among the faithful, who filled the oldest Polish church in the state of New Jersey. Among them were not only Poles, but also Indians, Latinos and Americans. The mass was led by Father Canon Józef Urban, accompanied by Deacon Marcelo David.
The parish priest of St. Anthony of Padua also gave a special sermon, in which he spoke about his life and the work that led him to holiness. He also drew attention to the importance and merits of the patron of the church that he has led for a quarter of a century, both in terms of his private life and the functioning of the parish, which - as the priest emphasized - was saved thanks to his intercession.

“When I came here as a parish priest, and that was 25 years ago, this church was slated for closure,” the priest recalled. On this occasion, he recalled that at that time, 5 to 11 people came to Sunday masses celebrated in English, and about 40 to the Polish masses.
"I had great hope that Our Lady of Częstochowa and St. Anthony of Padua would help me rebuild this community," said Father Canon Józef Urban. He added that thanks to the prayer he directed to God through their intercession and hard work, he managed not only to attract the faithful to the church again, but also to restore and renovate the temple and other parish buildings.
It is worth adding that thanks to the efforts of the Polish parish priest, not only did this church survive, but it was also included on the list of American historic monuments and obtained a special protected status.

“Today, let us thank God for the great pious life of St. Anthony and for surrounding us with his care,” the priest added in conclusion. Canon Józef Urban also noted the large number of believers present at the indulgence mass, which, as he stated, is proof that prayer through the intercession of the patron of the oldest Polish parish in New Jersey works and brings the appropriate effects.
Since this special service fell on the Sunday that Father's Day was celebrated in the United States, he also gave a special blessing to all the fathers attending the mass. In memory of St. Anthony's charitable work, the faithful attending the indulgence mass received small blessed loaves of bread. After the mass, everyone went on a procession through the streets surrounding the Church of St. Anthony of Padua in Jersey City.

MEETING WITH THE FAITHFUL
The culmination of the pilgrimage ceremony was a meeting with the faithful, which took place after the procession and took place in the parish hall. Also present were priests from friendly parishes from Jersey City - Fr. Rafał Smoła, administrator of the Holy Rosary Church and Fr. Dr. Tomasz Mazurek, vicar of the parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and a lecturer at Seton Hall University. All guests were welcomed by Bogusława Huang, director of the Polish School of Marshal Józef Piłsudski, responsible for preparing the occasional ceremony and meetings with the faithful.

"Our participation in today's indulgence is an expression of gratitude to St. Anthony for his intercession, as well as an expression of our faith that the saints are among us and are ready to intercede for us and lead us to God," emphasized Mrs. Bogusia. She also expressed a request that the patron of the oldest Polish parish in New Jersey would take care of all the faithful every day.
She also conveyed her thanks to those who helped her prepare the pilgrimage meeting and refreshments. She also directed words of gratitude towards the birthday boy Antoni Kessler for his great support and help he shows to the school and parish.

In connection with the name day celebrations, the people gathered in the hall sang the traditional "Sto lat" to him and to his wife Zuzanna. In turn, students of the Polish School of Marshal Józef Piłsudski presented him with a special diploma, and his wife with a bouquet of beautiful flowers.
Canon Józef Urban also thanked them and all participants of the indulgence festivities. He also directed special words of appreciation towards Bogusława Huang and her assistants.
“Without you and your help, this celebration would not have taken place,” the priest emphasized.
The family celebration was graced with a beautiful performance by the seven-person vocal-instrumental group The Lisicki Family Band.

„Święty Antoni jest znany na całym świecie, a jego imię zostało rozsławione przez jego błogosławione życie. Uwielbiają go wszyscy, a zwłaszcza Polacy, Włosi, Portugalczycy i Argentyńczycy. Urodził się w Portugalii, a zmarł we Włoszech” – wyjaśnił w rozmowie z „Nowym Dziennikiem” ks. kanonik Józef Urban opowiadając o patronie najstarszej polskiej parafii w stanie New Jersey.
