The Gabriel low is over Poland. The main wall of rain is approaching, and this will be a key day.
Central and Eastern Europe is currently under the influence of a multi-center low pressure system originating in Belarus. At the same time, the western part of the continent is being affected by a broad high pressure system centered over the Atlantic and with a secondary center over Scandinavia. Poland has found itself in the zone of atmospheric fronts associated with the low pressure system, whose center – initially located over Romania – has now moved over Belarus.
Than Gabriel in Poland – until when?On Tuesday evening, the Genoese low, named Gabriel, reached the Polish-Ukrainian border. The results of numerical models indicate its stagnation - the system remains almost motionless, which means long-term precipitation and hydrological hazard.
According to IMGW, this situation may last several days, and the consequences will be felt in many regions. The main wave of rain is forecast for Wednesday, July 9, and the night of July 9 to 10 – this will be a key period in terms of weather threats.
Weather forecast for July 9 - storms, rainfall, floodingThe forecast for Wednesday indicates a dominance of heavy cloudiness in almost the entire country. Greater clearings are expected only in the north-west. In the centre and in the south there will be moderate rainfall, in places strong intensity. In the east, storms are possible, locally with hail. Intense rainfall creates a flood risk.
Total rainfall can reach:
- up to 35 mm in the north-east,
- up to 50 mm in the center and south of the country,
- up to 60 mm in the foothill regions of the Carpathians and the Beskids.
Maximum temperatures will range from 12°C in mountainous regions to 23°C in the eastern and western reaches . Weak and moderate winds, gusty during storms – up to 65 km/h. High in the mountains, gusts of up to 70 km/h are possible.
Where is it raining? In the morning, rainfall occurs in Podlasie, Mazovia, the Lublin region and Lesser Poland.
A night full of precipitationThe rain will not stop on the night of July 9-10. Particularly heavy rainfall is forecast for the eastern half of Poland – in some places it may reach even 40 mm . In the west and north-west of the country there will be no rainfall.
Minimum temperatures will range from 8°C in the foothills to 17°C by the sea. Winds will be moderate, gusty at times, especially in the center and east of the country.
IMWM warnings – up to 200 mm of rain locallyThe Institute of Meteorology and Water Management has issued warnings of 1, 2 and even 3 degrees of heavy rainfall. The most exposed provinces are: Silesia, Lesser Poland, Łódź, Mazovia, Opole and Świętokrzyskie. In these regions, from 170 mm to even 200 mm of rain may fall. The remaining warnings apply to almost all of eastern and central Poland.
The alerts are valid until Thursday, July 10, until 8:00 a.m., and in some regions until 8:00 p.m. the same day.
