Prof. Krzysztof Filipiak has become the new director of the Center for Postgraduate Medical Education, the Ministry of Health announced on Thursday. The change in the position of the head of the university results from an amendment to the act on the Center for Postgraduate Medical Education, which came into force on January 1 of this year.

"Prof. dr hab. n. med. Krzysztof J. Filipiak was selected for the position of director of the Medical Center for Postgraduate Education. After completing all stages of the competition, the selection was made by the team for conducting the recruitment for the position of director of the Medical Center for Postgraduate Education, appointed by Minister Izabela Leszczyna," the Ministry of Health reported on the X website.

The new director of CMKP is a cardiologist, internal medicine specialist, hypertensiologist, clinical pharmacologist, and also the president of the Polish Society for the Advancement of Medicine – Medicine XXI.

The previous director of the university was Prof. Piotr Kryst, whose term of office began in September last year.

The change in the position results from the amendment of the act on CMKP, which came into force on 1 January this year. Before the amendment, the director was elected - like in universities - by a college of electors composed of academic teachers. In accordance with the new regulations, recruitment for a four-year term is now carried out by a six-person team, consisting of three representatives of the Ministry of Health, two of the Supreme Medical Council and one of the Supreme Council of Nurses and Midwives.

At the stage of government work on the regulations, the university itself expressed its objection to the provisions changing the method of selecting the head of the Centre, considering it a threat to its autonomy.

A similar position was also presented by several organizations, including the OZZL Residents' Association. The Lewiatan Confederation and Employers for Health appealed in a letter to the Minister of Health, Izabela Leszczyna, to stop work on these provisions. The International Medical Students' Association, IFMSA-Poland, assessed that the proposed changes mean the subordination of the CMKP to the Ministry of Health, and this "will lead to the politicization of the organization (...), which may have negative effects related to the level of postgraduate education".

The Center for Postgraduate Medical Education is a medical school established in 1971, based in Warsaw, offering specialist studies for physicians, dentists, nurses and midwives, laboratory diagnosticians, pharmacists, physiotherapists and for fields that apply to health care, providing continuing education and conducting doctoral studies. Teaching and research activities are carried out in connection with the provision of health services in clinical hospitals and other medical entities. (PAP)
