Unfortunately, in the case of sports events in India, this is not the first time. More often than not, there are too many people in the venues than they can accommodate. When panic breaks out in the crowd, tragic events occur later.
In this particular case, the reports are of what happened outside the venue itself, but just outside it. Cricket fans were celebrating the success of the local team, Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The crowd was very large, and when panic broke out, there was no way to control the crowd.

Looking at the latest reports coming out of the Indian Premier League final, it can be expected that the tragic death toll may be even higher.
