On Friday evening, Iga Świątek shared some very sad news via social media: the cat of Poland's best tennis player has passed away.

It's no secret that Świątek loves animals. The former WTA ranking leader has frequently shared photos of her pet on social media and has responded with a smile to animal-related posts, for example, when she was compared to various cats.

On Friday evening, Świątek shared some very sad news. Poland's top tennis player said goodbye to her beloved cat after 17 years.

"I hope we gave you the best possible home a cat could have. I'm grateful for 17 years of unconditional love," the athlete wrote.

Świątek will now compete in the WTA tournament in Cincinnati. Her first opponent at the American event will be Anastasia Potapova.
