This story shouldn't have happened! A huge sensation in Paris

This is a movie story that really happened. Almost exactly a year ago, Lois Boisson was supposed to introduce herself to the tennis world, getting a chance to debut on the Roland Garros courts. Instead of a so-called "wild card", an invitation from the tournament organizers, her everyday sports life was put into question. The 21-year-old Frenchwoman suffered a very serious injury - a torn cruciate ligament.
Roland Garros: Lois Boisson is the heroine of France! It's a huge sensationThe tennis player from the historic capital of Burgundy, Dijon, did not give up and returned to play. Boisson has already reached the finals twice in ITF tournaments, which are a shelf lower than the WTA tour, in 2025. In Spanish Terrassa, Boisson lost to Austrian Lilli Tagger - at the end of March - but in mid-May the Frenchwoman triumphed on home soil, in Saint-Gaudens. Boisson proved to be better in the final than Tatiana Prozarova from Russia.
This boded a return to the right path for the tennis player, although we are still talking about a player who was ranked 361st in the WTA ranking. However, this did not prevent the organizers of Roland Garros 2025 from doing what they wanted a year earlier. Boisson got a ticket to the tournament and started fighting for her dreams.
It must be admitted that the French representative quickly proved that the "wild card" was in the right hands. On Wednesday, June 4, 2025, she equaled or broke several records in the history of world tennis. Boisson defeated Mirra Andreeva, number 6 in the WTA ranking, and registered for the semifinals of the Grand Slam. She was the first in the so-called Open era, i.e. fully professional tennis, to register for the best "four" of a Grand Slam tournament as a "wild card holder.
But that's not all. Boisson also dispatched Jessica Pegula, an American with number 3 in the WTA ranking, in the quarterfinals. Only Monica Seles managed to do such a feat, throwing out two opponents from the world's top ten, in a Grand Slam tournament. Also in Paris, but it happened in 1989. Looking at Boisson's ranking, being outside the first 300 players in the world, she repeated the achievement of Serena Williams from Chicago in 1997 - throwing out two opponents from the WTA's top ten.
Not enough? As a debutant in a Grand Slam event, reaching the semifinals straight away, Boisson was the third in history to do so, counting from 1980. This was previously achieved by the aforementioned Seles (1989) and Jennifer Capriati (1990), also in Paris.
Wednesday's semi-final was full of great emotions. There is no hiding the fact that the spectacle on Philippe-Chatrier's court had a gigantic dose of twists and turns. Both sets were brilliant. The first won after a tie-break 8:6, with both the Frenchwoman and Andreyeva defending set points. In total, this set was completed in almost 1.5 hours of play. The second? 6:3 for the winner, but it must be admitted that the incredibly talented Russian was already losing her nerves a bit. Understandably, apart from her great skills, it must be remembered that Andreyeva is only 18 years old.
Boisson is the first French tennis player to reach the semi-finals of Roland Garros since 2011 – when Marion Bartoli was there. The French are already rubbing their hands for the next part of this beautiful story, and this one will be on Thursday. That is when Boisson will fight in the semi-finals, and Coco Gauff will be waiting on the other side of the net. The world's "number two", an extremely strong American, 21 years old. And already indicated as the successor to Serena Williams.
Iga Świątek – Aryna Sabalenka. Where and when to watch the semi-final?The Boisson-Gauff match will start right after the end of the match that will open Thursday's (i.e. June 5) semi-final excitement. First on the court will be Iga Świątek and Aryna Sabalenka. An absolute hit in the women's tournament bracket, a clash of the last two leaders of the WTA ranking. After many months of domination, the Polish player has just been replaced by a tennis player born in Minsk.
The Świątek-Sabalenko semi-final will not start until 3:00 p.m., right after the mixed doubles final. The Pole is the defending champion, having won an amazing 26th consecutive match at Roland Garros.
Will Sabalenka be able to throw the "Queen of Paris" out of the tournament? Or maybe Świątek will show once again that it is on the Parisian clay that he feels best? We will find out on Thursday, late afternoon.
Where to watch Roland Garros 2025? All matches are available on the MAX online platform. Additionally, the most important events, including the matches of Iga Świątek, are shown on Eurosport channels.
