An 88-year-old man died today following an accident on the A1 motorway, heading north-south, in the Mealhada area, a source from Civil Protection told Lusa.

“It was a collision followed by a skid, at kilometre 198 of the A1, after Mealhada, at the entrance to Coimbra”, the commander of the Mealhada Volunteer Firefighters, Nuno João, told Lusa.

According to the report, the accident resulted in one fatality, an 88-year-old man, and two minor injuries - a 77-year-old woman who was travelling in the same car and a man around 30 years old in the second vehicle.

“The A1 was not closed or restricted, as the vehicles were off the road,” stated commander Nuno João.

According to the Sub-regional Command of the Coimbra Region of Civil Protection, the alert occurred at 07:18 and more than 20 operators were on site, supported by 10 vehicles from the Mealhada and Pampilhosa Volunteer Firefighters, the National Republican Guard (GNR) and the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM).
