Carlos Gouveia Martins questions failures in the placement of children in public schools in Portimão

At the Municipal Assembly session held this Tuesday, Carlos Gouveia Martins, municipal deputy and leader of the PSD Municipal Group, was the first signatory of a formal request delivered to the president of the Portimão Municipal Assembly, Isabel Guerreiro, requesting the convening of an extraordinary session dedicated exclusively to municipal education policy in the municipality.
The request, presented under article 37 of the Rules of Procedure and Law no. 75/2013, was signed by a third of the Municipal Deputies — a legally sufficient number to require the convening of the aforementioned session — and has the full support of the PSD and CDS-PP benches.
Single item on the agenda«Discussion and evaluation of the municipal policy for the area of education, with a special focus on the installed capacity in the municipal school system, namely in the pre-school and 1st cycle public schools in the municipality of Portimão; namely in the adequacy of supply in relation to demand and in the measures that the municipality is adopting to guarantee an effective and equitable response to Portimão families».
The initiative comes after receiving several reports from parents and guardians in the municipality, who expressed serious concerns about the lack of school places and the lack of response from the Municipal Council . The proposing groups believe that this issue, of the utmost social importance, cannot continue without institutional debate or accountability from the municipal executive.
“This is an issue that goes beyond political parties: it concerns all families in Portimão. We cannot accept that the placement of children in public schools continues to be a lottery, without transparent criteria or dialogue with parents,” said Carlos Gouveia Martins, after submitting the application. “We did what is required of those with public responsibility: we acted. And we want clear answers.”
The request now requires the president of the Municipal Assembly to call an extraordinary session within the legal deadline, and it is expected that the topic will be publicly debated with all elected officials and members of the municipal executive.
