Educational Organic Gardens in schools raise awareness of sustainability

This educational initiative includes the Kindergarten of Vidago, the EB N.º5 School of Chaves (Caneiro), the EB1 School of Vilar de Nantes and the Francisco Gonçalves Carneiro School, which once again received planting of lettuce, onions, potatoes, tomatoes and aromatic herbs this year, in an action that included the participation of councilor Paula Chaves.
The aim is to continue the initiative and extend it to more schools, with technical support being provided, as well as the provision of seeds and plants and respective gardening kits throughout the municipality.
The aim of the project is to raise awareness among young people about the importance of eating healthy foods, awakening their interest in growing vegetables and at the same time learning about the germination/planting and growth processes of plants. In these green spaces, teachers can explore new knowledge with students through practical activities in their gardens.
“At a time when schools are facing the challenge of educating conscious and responsible citizens, educational gardens stand out as a practical and effective response”, highlights the municipality. By cultivating the land, students “also cultivate knowledge, respect and a sense of community, values that they will take with them” beyond the school walls.
At a time when information is more important than ever, support regional and local journalism. Access to most of VTM's news is (still) free, but it is not free of charge. Journalism costs money and requires investment. This contribution is a way of directly supporting A Voz de Trás-os-Montes and its journalists. Our contribution is independent and local journalism, but not only that. It is continuing to inform despite all the contingencies of confinement, without having stopped for a single day.
