Part of the government is already based in what remains the headquarters of Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD), but to accommodate even more entities, renovations to the Campus XXI building are needed. At the Council of Ministers, the Executive approved a budget of €16.5 million for this purpose.
In a statement, the Government reveals that it “approved a Resolution of the Council and Ministers that authorizes the General Secretariat of the Government (SG-Gov) to carry out the expenditure related to the remodeling of the Campus XXI building, up to a maximum amount of 16.5 million euros, between this year and 2026”.
This investment “intends to adapt the spaces previously occupied by Caixa Geral de Depósitos, so that they can be made available to members of the Government and public entities,” the Government adds.
It should be noted that CGD handed over its headquarters to the State in the form of a cash dividend. The agreement, also signed with António Costa's government, provides for the public bank to leave this building next year, moving its headquarters to a new building in Parque das Nações, which it acquired for €160 million.
Since then, the current CGD headquarters building in Campo Pequeno has begun to house some public bodies, a process that has accelerated with the move of several ministries to this building.
Luís Montenegro's Executive states that the approved expenditure will, in the long term, allow the Government to be concentrated "in one location for greater efficiency, agility and maximization of resources."
"By coming here, it is estimated that in a normal year we will save around 19 to 20 million euros just in the cost of spaces, rent, logistics, cleaning, security, electricity, and the vehicle fleet," said Leitão Amaro, Minister of the Presidency, in July of last year.
As part of this process, the Government states in the Council of Ministers' statement, there will be the "release of public buildings for housing and rental purposes."
Just over a year ago, the Executive's forecast was that the concentration on Campus XXI "will allow for the freeing up of three buildings leased to private individuals" and another "27 State buildings that can be put to various uses in the service of the people."
