Local elections: Civil engineer Ana Matias is the PS candidate for the Anadia City Council

Civil engineer Ana Matias is the PS's choice to run for mayor of Anadia in the local elections, with a focus on combating “the atony in which the municipality finds itself”.
“I accepted the invitation from the PS council of Anadia, because I understand the intended aims, namely in combating the atony in which the council finds itself, and which results from a legacy that has been installed and that has lasted over time, which I understand as not healthy for a democracy, ending up becoming corrupted”, said the candidate to the Lusa news agency.
At 48 years old, this is the first time that Ana Matias, who was previously commander of the Anadia Volunteer Firefighters, is running for president of the Anadia City Council.
If elected, the civil engineer intends to implement policies adapted to the reality and needs of the municipality of Anadia, which “allow, above all, to achieve standards of quality, safety and well-being in the daily lives of citizens”.
“There is no better place to live than in a place where local authorities respond, help and participate in the lives of each of its residents.”
Its priorities include housing, land use planning, the environment, civil protection and inclusion.
“These are fundamental axes for the new political era, so necessary to respond to this new world that awaits us.”
On its Facebook page, the Anadia Municipal Political Commission of the Socialist Party reported that it approved, last week, the candidacy of Ana Matias as head of the list for the Anadia Municipal Council.
“Support for the candidacy reflects confidence in his ability to change the direction of the municipality, to be able to do better and to lead a new team that works for the progress of Anadia. It also means a commitment to evolving the PS’s usual pattern in choosing candidates”, he explained.
In the race for president, Ana Matias will face vice-president Jorge Sampaio, chosen by the PSD and who has the support of the CDS-PP.
Teresa Cardoso was elected president of the Anadia City Council in 2021, by the Independent Movement Anadia First (MIAP), with 45.34% of the votes, while the PSD collected 27.16%, PS 13.28%, CDU 5.31%, Chega 2.42% and Iniciativa Liberal 1.71%.
The Anadia Chamber executive is made up of four elected members from MIAP, two from PSD and one from PS.
The local elections are expected to take place between September and October.
