Philanthropic Democracy

On the evening of June 17, the Narciso Ferreira Theater in Riba de Ave was the stage for an unprecedented event in our country: the first Giving Circle held in Portugal. An initiative promoted by the Narciso Ferreira Foundation , in partnership with the Portuguese Center of Foundations, which brought together people, companies and institutions in an environment of true philanthropic democracy — where everyone had the opportunity to contribute and decide, together, the fate of their donations.
The concept, which has already been proven in other countries, is based on a simple but powerful idea: philanthropy can be a participatory, transparent and community-based act. Instead of decisions being made in small circles or offices, the Giving Circle gives people a voice. It allows each participant — regardless of the amount they can donate — to feel part of a collective decision about how to support important causes and transformative projects in their region.
The result? Almost 10 thousand euros raised , channelled into three projects promoted by local institutions in Riba de Ave. Projects that will work on social inclusion through sport , environmental awareness and the development of a sensory garden for the children of the village. Three seeds of change that only germinated thanks to the direct and enthusiastic involvement of the community.
This pioneering experience has reminded us of something essential: philanthropy is not exclusive to large donors or entities with many resources. We can all give, we can all participate, we can all have a voice. The true strength of philanthropy lies in its ability to mobilize and unite, to create bonds and to build, together, responses to local challenges.
The Giving Circle of Riba de Ave showed the way. Now, the challenge is to multiply this type of initiative, bringing philanthropic democracy to other communities and territories. Because the future of philanthropy will be stronger the more collective, transparent and participatory it is.
