Popular University with training in March

Registration is now open for the first course at the Universidade Popular de Coimbra (UPC). Entitled “Music – Protagonist of History”, it will begin on March 7th, and will be repeated on the remaining Fridays of the month, seeking to “explore the importance of music throughout the centuries”, with an analysis of its social, political and cultural impact.
The training, limited to 30 participants, will cover four interdependent topics separately. The first will be about music-architecture, starting from the musical note to explain a “building” “that History has made take different forms”. The session will be led by Catarina Peixinho, professor and accompanying pianist at the Coimbra Music Conservatory and member of Quintetango.
On March 14, professor at the Coimbra Conservatory of Music and violinist Hugo Brito will start from the idea that “In the beginning was beauty” to an approach in which the discussion of tastes will always be supported by the discovery of the many lives of music. In the third lesson, on the 21st, Júlio Dias (harpsichordist and professor at the Coimbra Conservatory and the Porto Higher School of Music) will talk about Monteverdi and Caccini, «the musical revolution in which those composers were involved and the profound consequences for the music of the 17th and 18th centuries», contextualizes the UPC.
The closing, on March 28, will analyze the role of popular music in the construction of what we call classical music, with the participation of Manuel Rocha, violinist and also professor at the Conservatory.
