Three injured after fire in cell at Santa Cruz do Bispo prison

Three people were injured today at the Santa Cruz do Bispo Prison, in Matosinhos, after an inmate admitted to the prison's psychiatry unit set his bed on fire, the Directorate-General for Reintegration and Prison Services revealed to Lusa.
In response to Lusa, the Directorate-General for Reinsertion and Prison Services (DGRSP) reported that the prisoner caught fire on the bed in the cell and that the fire was immediately detected by the surveillance and nursing staff who intervened to extinguish it, with the Matosinhos-Leça firefighters being called to extinguish the fire and extract the smoke.
“No one was burned as a result of the incident, and a nursing staff member, a guard and the inmate who committed the incident were evacuated by INEM, strictly as a precaution, as they inhaled smoke,” revealed the DGRSP, which mentioned three injured people.
According to the DGRSP, at 15:50, the situation was already “completely resolved, with the firefighters having abandoned the prison at around 15:00”.
The inmate in question is admitted to the Psychiatry and Mental Health Clinic of the Santa Cruz do Bispo Prison.
The alert, according to DGRSP, was given at 1:30 pm.
Contacted by Lusa, a source from the Sub-Regional Command of the Porto Metropolitan Area said that four people suffered injuries, one of them serious, following the fire in the male wing of that prison, having been transported to the Pedro Hispano Hospital, in Matosinhos.
Firefighters from Leixões, Matosinhos-Leça and Leça do Balio were present at the scene, with a total of 14 operatives and five vehicles, revealed the Civil Protection source.
