Bettencourt's silkscreens mark centenary
Nuno Bettencourt is one of the authors whose work marks the centenary of Gazeta das Caldas. The author, an artist who works in various forms of expression, enjoyed being part of the group of selected authors because “it is always good to participate in the anniversary of a newspaper that follows our initiatives”.
The artist, who graduated from ESAD.CR in 2001, is linked to several artistic collectives and believes that it is important that local artists “can also come together to pay tribute to a local media outlet”. Although he did not create a specific work for the celebration, Bettencourt presented several of his latest works produced in silkscreen where he explored the theme of portraiture, of the facial image that is presented in a tribal, urban and graffiti-related language.
“The copies of the series for sale are all different,” said the author, who used silkscreen drawing techniques and appropriated figurative images. The artistic proposal has no fixed designation. Today, the author teaches at the Caldas School of Arts and also coordinates the silkscreen workshop. He also has experience in theater, set design and event production, from Atelier Arte e Expressão and Caldas Late Night. Bettencourt has coordinated projects such as Galdéria and MAGA, the Caldas illustration exhibition.
An exhibition is currently on display at the Hospital Museum, created “in partnership with artists from ADAO (Barreiro Arts and Crafts Development Association) and eight artists from Caldas who participated at the invitation of Atelier Arte e Expressão. The curator is Carla Pacheco from ADAO.
In addition to this partnership, the author also established a connection with the LAC Association of Lagos, where an exhibition was held featuring works by 12 artists who live and work in Caldas. “We are also going to publish some fanzines,” said the artist, adding that he currently has six exhibitions taking place in various parts of the country. Bettencourt’s silkscreens cost 100 euros and can be purchased online or at the Gazeta das Caldas headquarters.
