Fado à La Carte sold out the CCC and had a surprise: a song dedicated to Caldas da Rainha
On Saturday night, fado took to the CCC stage, with the Fado à La Carte concert.
The compositions of the songs in this project are by Jorge Mangorrinha from Caldas – who in his poems evokes the different dishes of a Portuguese meal. The texts of the Caldense were joined by the compositions of the maestro Tiago Machado and the voice of the singer FF.
The sounds of violins, viola, cello, double bass, percussion and piano also joined the stage. And of course, the Portuguese guitar, played by José Manuel Neto.
Right at the beginning of the concert, the actor José Ramalho read a text by Jorge Mangorrinha, which made the audience aware that Fado à la Carte comprises a dozen songs that “create a story that goes through the steps of an imagined meal and a Portuguese menu”.
Fado and gastronomy come together at the table, “with proposals that salute music and food in Portugal and that have already crossed borders”.
The host also said that “time is dictated by both the hustle and bustle of preparing dishes every day and the pleasure of eating, with moderation or lightness”. And the space induced “is diverse, depending on whether you are at a table or at the counter, inside or outside the home, in a restaurant or in a hotel”.
Times and places change, “but there are always people who cook for us and base their cooking on tradition or contemporary cuisine. And this magical place is where dishes are born. The kitchen is like a kind of studio for those who prepare meals, as well as for those who record songs”. The result “is truly delicious”, assured the host.
And in fact the audience liked and applauded each of the songs presented, such as “Entrada”, “As sopas”, “Fado à la Carte”, “Bife à portuguesa”, “Fado do Café” or “A Conta”.
“The project, the concert and the album are unprecedented and an example of persistence”, explained Jorge Mangorrinha, adding that “it was difficult to obtain sensitivity and availability from the City Council and the CCC, because we always defended the interest of the concert taking place in Caldas and not in Lisbon or Porto, as could have happened”.
The author was very pleased that the cultural center was packed, not only with people from the region, but also with others who had come from far away.
The CCC “received people from Porto and Lisbon, “who certainly came because they also felt that this was a unique concert”, he added. Overall, the Caldense native considers that this work “is an example of how musical culture cannot be served on a silver platter and not just on disposable plates”. Even at the end, Mangorrinha paid tribute to his father, who was also a musician.
For the people of Caldas there was a surprise at the end of the performance: “Carta das Caldas” was performed, a song dedicated to the city that hosted the live performance of this project. Gazeta das Caldas publishes the composition of this new song, provided by its author.
