Maria Villares and Coca Rodriguez Coelho promote the exhibition 'Water Line'

The exhibition 'Linha d'água' brings together artists Maria Villares and Coca Rodriguez Coelho around the theme of water, which they have been working with independently for at least two decades. Curated by Ernesto Bonato, it features approximately 40 medium- and large-scale watercolors, artist's books, and objects such as the work "Visibilidade da Ausência" (Acrylic, water, and petroleum jelly, 2000) by Maria Villares and "Linha d'água" (wood, glass, and water, 2001/2025) by Coca Rodriguez Coelho. The exhibition will be held at Espaço Nexus from October 25th to December 20th. There will be a talk with the artists and the curator on November 8th at 3:00 pm, and a watercolor workshop for children on Wednesday, November 26th, starting at 2:30 pm. All activities are open to the public and free.
"More than just approaching water as a theme, they share in their ways of thinking and acting the very qualities of water. Of all of them, perhaps the most remarkable is their ability to position themselves on that thin and transitory line, ever-moving and fluid, between the surface and the submergence, that 'waterline' from which it is possible to witness two worlds that touch but never mix, protected by that invisible film defined by densities. This requires a continuous diving and surfacing, and often remaining on the threshold between two worlds, being in both and at the same time in neither. As with boats, this waterline varies depending on the weight carried, the density through which one moves, the speed at which one moves. There is a sensitive and subtle interaction between inside and outside. Everything depends on this interrelationship. It defines the limit of these worlds. In that moment, the artist discovers themselves as a transversal connecting element, a bridge between worlds, someone for whom diving and surfacing are two sides of the same same mirror. Hence the relevance of this exhibition and the research of these two artists, sensitive to the designs of water, its movements, memory, and vital force,” comments curator Ernesto Bonato.
