MTV will (really) be Unplugged: Channels 'switched off' in Europe until the end of the year

This is sad news for anyone who spent much of their adolescence sitting on the couch waiting to see the music videos for their favorite songs and artists.
After decades of delighting music lovers, MTV is going to 'shut down'.
Entertainment giant Paramount Global has announced that, after 44 years of continuous broadcasting, the channel will close five of its channels by the end of 2025, namely: MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV and MTV Live.
They will be deactivated first in the United Kingdom and Ireland, followed by France, Germany, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Australia, and Brazil. According to Euronews, the channels will cease broadcasting across Europe by the end of this year.
The decision comes as the company takes aggressive cost-cutting measures. It's worth noting that Paramount Global merged with Skydance Media this year.
Beyond financial considerations, the decision also reflects how consumption habits for this type of content have changed over the years, with many fans migrating to digital options.
MTV is a music channel that broadcasts music videos 24 hours a day. Despite these closures, it's worth noting that the main channel, MTV HD, will remain on the air, broadcasting reality shows such as 'Naked Dating UK' and 'Geordie Shore.'
MTV launched in the United States in 1981 with the goal of showcasing the most popular music videos, E! News recalls. The first video to air on the channel was the song "Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles.
MTV Europe launched six years later in 1987, and in 1997 the UK officially got its own channel.
