Toyota will launch the Land Cruiser FJ, the compact tough jeep

According to Japanese media, Toyota is preparing to introduce the new generation of the Land Cruiser FJ , a compact SUV that combines robustness and off-road capability with a bold aesthetic to differentiate itself from the rest. We're talking about a Jeep, not an SUV, because the brand maintains its commitment to a body bolted to a frame with side members and cross members , a more robust design typical of models such as pickup trucks and small trucks.

If Japanese media is to be believed, Toyota will reveal to the public on October 20th — on the eve of the start of the Japanese mobility exhibition — the second generation of the Land Cruiser FJ, thus replacing the model sold between 2006 and 2022 and whose exterior lines were based on a prototype presented at the 2005 Chicago Auto Show. The new Land Cruiser FJ, which is expected to hit the market in mid-2026 , inherits its aesthetics from the Toyota Compact Cruiser EV Concept, revealed at the end of 2021.

The Compact Cruiser EV electric prototype, presented in 2021, served as the basis for the new Land Cruiser FJ

The Japanese brand's new jeep, which shrinks slightly compared to the first generation (its length drops from 4.67 to 4.5 meters), will be manufactured in Thailand and will feature modern, pleasing lines, certainly aiming to satisfy traditional customers, but also trying to captivate younger buyers seeking bolder aesthetics. Although externally based on an electric prototype, the new Land Cruiser FJ will only feature combustion engines , with a 2.7-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated diesel engine or, alternatively, a 2.4-liter turbodiesel, which also powers the Hilux pickup truck, which is manufactured on the same Thai production line, planned for the Asian and North American markets.

Launched in 2006 and produced until 2022, this is the first Land Cruiser FJ, here in the ultimate Final Edition version. Now the successor is coming soon.

Dubbed the baby Land Cruiser, the new FJ features a traditional 4x4 system , certainly inherited from the pickup truck. It's less sophisticated than that used by other Land Cruisers, but decidedly simpler and more robust (and cheaper). The brand hasn't yet revealed its European market plans for the new FJ, but it's certain that it will face competitors on the Old Continent that emphasize ruggedness, such as the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco.
