It is the third exhibition of the Porto foundation that takes place at the Arts Center
On June 12, the exhibition “Matéria/Ação – Escultura e vídeo do anos 1960 e 1970” (Matter/Action – Sculpture and video from the 1960s and 1970s), from the Serralves Foundation collection, opened to the public at the Leopoldo de Almeida Museum. The inauguration of the exhibition was attended by attendees, with interventions by local authorities from Caldas and the Serralves Foundation. Caldas is one of the localities on the list of Founders of that institution.
After the collection of photographs by director Manoel de Oliveira, an exhibition by Helena Almeida followed. Now, the new exhibition brings together a set of sculptures from the 1960s and 1970s, which allow us to recognise central aspects of the artistic practices associated with British abstract sculpture, North American minimalism and, above all, post-minimalism and process art that marked the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s.
The sculptural works are presented in dialogue with video works from the same period, thus highlighting the points of contact and interference between the two fields of creation.
Armando Cabral, representing the Serralves Foundation, announced that this exhibition includes pieces that art must reflect the times – these artists capture the essence and spirit of the times in the 60s and 70s. For the administrator, Caldas is a city that stands out in terms of contemporary art in Portugal, since it is here that artists who are fundamental to contemporary art today are trained and work here. What is truly important is the art that is made in Caldas today!” According to the Councillor for Culture, Conceição Henriques, this exhibition is “excellent” because the Foundation “supports us a lot and wants to continue coming to Caldas”.
In her opinion, this has been a “good partnership for both parties”, given that the foundation has “very interesting and important exhibitions and we have the team and logistics to work well together”. The mayor advised that everyone should come and visit this exhibition whose pieces “are almost contemporary to the works at the Leopoldo de Almeida Museum”.
The exhibition “Matter / Action – Sculpture and video from the 1960s and 1970s”, curated by Joana Valsassina, is on display until October 27th. ■
