Chamber approves minimum wage for temporary teachers

The Chamber of Deputies approved this Tuesday (14) the bill that guarantees a minimum wage for temporary teachers working in basic education. The minimum wage for teachers is R$4,867.77, with a 40-hour work week. The proposal still needs to be analyzed by the Senate.
House Speaker Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB) announced that this week's votes will focus on education. "Everyone, we're starting this week's voting with our foot on the accelerator. Today was a day of hard work for teachers and children," Motta said at the X.
Bill 672/25, authored by Representative Rafael Brito (MDB-AL), was approved as a substitute bill by the rapporteur, Representative Carol Dartora (PT-PR). The rapporteur noted that most states already pay the minimum wage to temporary teachers, using Fundeb as the primary source of funding for this expense.
"The project does not imply the creation of new expenses or the undue transfer of burdens to federative entities," highlighted Carol Dartora.
The text establishes that the minimum wage will be applicable to professionals in public education for basic education hired for a fixed period and with the minimum training determined by the Law of Guidelines and Bases of National Education (LDB).
The rule will also apply to professionals who perform pedagogical support activities for teaching, such as management, planning, inspection, supervision, guidance and educational coordination, reported the Câmara Agency.
The issue is also the subject of a lawsuit in the Federal Supreme Court (STF). The justices are reviewing an appeal by the Pernambuco state government against the state Court of Justice's decision granting a teacher the right to a minimum wage.
The ruling on the matter will have widespread repercussions. Therefore, the thesis established by the Supreme Court should be applied to similar cases pending in lower courts.
Government leader José Guimarães (Workers' Party-CE) stated that he participated in meetings with ministers from various departments to advance the proposal. "The government will submit a favorable vote as a way of honoring teachers," he declared.
Representative Luiz Lima (Novo-RJ) pointed out that it's impossible to equalize the salaries of temporary and tenured teachers. "This is a fictitious, romantic, and impractical idea. The poorest municipalities will go to court and win," he stated.
