Haddad: If the economy is doing well, the chances of doing well in the elections are greater

Finance Minister Fernando Haddad said this Friday, the 13th, that if the economy is doing well, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's chances of being reelected will increase. Haddad made the statement during a meeting held by the Prerogatives group in an attempt to dissociate the fiscal issue from the government's performance in the 2026 elections .
"I don't think it will be the size of the deficit that will determine the election . If the economy is doing well, the chance of success in the election will be greater," said the minister, adding that President Lula is proud of the fiscal framework .
Haddad stated that, when he took over the Ministry of Finance and his team realized the need to make an adjustment to the public accounts, many people, including those within his own party, were against it.
"Within the PT there were people who were against adjusting public accounts, anyone who knows the PT knows that. They look at the fiscal authorities in Japan and the United States and think that the situations are similar, and they are not," he said.
When asked by one of the participants in the meeting about how he sees the greatest pressure on the Health and Education floors and where it comes from, the minister said that the greatest pressure is in Congress. But he added that the discussion is still very unclear, that there is no clarity on the subject and that he does not yet know if the proposal will have all the support necessary to be approved.
The minister said he has called the leaders to talk and indicate the points that need to be changed. He also stated that he understands that these areas need to be protected and what can be discussed are the ways in which this protection will be done.
