Sardine fishing with seine nets banned between Saturday and Monday in the Algarve

Sardine fishing using purse seines will be prohibited in the Algarve between Saturday and Monday, according to a note from the Directorate-General for Natural Resources, Safety and Maritime Services (DGRM).

The period of prohibition of catching sardines applies “in the area of jurisdiction of the captaincies of the reconnaissance ports of Olhãopesca and Barlapescas, from 6:00 pm on Saturday (June 21) to 6:00 pm on Monday (June 23) – captaincies of Olhão, Faro Tavira, Vila Real de Santo António, Lagos and Portimão”, reads the document.

The art of seine fishing uses a 'wall' of long, high nets thrown in order to surround the fish, in this case sardines, from the sides and also from below, reducing their ability to escape.

The DGRM is a central service of the direct administration of the State, with administrative autonomy, whose objective is to develop maritime security and services, implement fishing policies and preserve resources.
